From
the coast of Cape Breton, comes a whimsical comedy that
delighted last years festival audiences and was awarded
special citations at both Cinefest Sudbury and the Toronto
International Film Festival.
Under the adept direction of Allan Moyle
(Pump up the Volume), exciting newcomer Liane
Balaban plays Moonie Pottie, an eccentric 15 year old
bookworm who yearns to escape the cramped little Catholic
community of bleak New Waterford to pursue adventure
in New York City. Her school teacher (Andrew McCarthy,
Weekend at Bernies), also a loner, sees in Moonie
the makings of an artist and offers her the chance of
a lifetime. He arranges a scholarship for her to attend
an arts high school in Manhattan, but her hopes are
dashed when her parents, Cookie (Mary Walsh, The
Divine Ryans) and Frances (Nicholas Campbell,
Da Vinci's Inquest), refuse to let her go. Events
turn when a family from the Bronx moves in next door.
Spunky 16 year old Lou (Tara Spencer-Nairn) and her
sexy Latin teacher mom (Cathy Moriarty, The Mambo
Kings) have arrived in New Waterford seeking refuge
from a tragedy resulting when Lou's boxer Dad accidently
killed a fighter in the ring. Lou possesses her father's
one-punch knockout that drops guys if they deserve it
- "If they're guilty, they will fall." Moonie
and Lou team up, dividing their time between chasing
boys and using Lou's special ability to avenge New Waterford
girls who have been mistreated by their boyfriends.
Together they hatch a daring plan for Moonie to escape
to New York
New Waterford Girl is highly original
and chock full of East Coast charm, wit and irreverent
fun, featuring a performance of great appeal by Balaban
, who was given a special jury award for her work at
last year's Toronto International Film Festival.
