Iranian
Director Majidi Majidi (Children of Heaven) returns
to his talent for exploring stories centred on children's
experiences with The Color of Paradise. The film
tells the heart wrenching story of Mohammed (Mohsen Ramezani),
a blind 8 year old boy (who is blind in real life) and
his relationship with his widowed father, Hashem (Hossein
Mahnumb). Hashem, bitter with the hand life has dealt
him, schemes to rid himself of his blind son and remarry
a young woman from a strict religious family. Thrown into
an apprenticeship with a blind carpenter, Mohammad begins
to succeed in his new life only to have his father's selfishness
and anger create disaster. Mohammad's father, though gifted
with sight, causes grave suffering because of his narrow
vision, while his blind son Mohammad views nothing but
sees what is important.
Majidi,
exploring the relationship between a father and his
son in Northern Iran, opens an intriguing window into
a world that is usually closed to North Americans and
in the process offers his most engrossing film to date.
