Appearing at the Toronto International Film Festival
in 2000, Dominik Moll's (INTIMITE) comically mesmerizing
tale of pathological obsession explores repressed desires
that lurk beneath the most conventional of human relationships.
Michel (Laurent Lucas, POLA X) is an aspiring
poet, whose poems, years prior, were published in a
school journal, and Claire (Mathilde Seigner, DRY CLEANING)
is a modern woman wrestling with the challenges of motherhood.
When they reach a point in theirrelationship, buried
under diapers and obligations, their frustrations begin
to boil over and a surprising saviour appears. Or is
he a saviour? Out of the blue, old school chum Harry
(Sergi Lopez, A PORNOGRAPHIC AFFAIR) appears and takes
an unusual interest in Michel and his poetry. He becomes
determined to help Michel develop his writing talents
but, unlike Michel, Harry is a man who doesn't compromise
and his obsession becomes both inspirational and deadly.
Under Harry's guidance, Michel's abandoned childhood
ambitions re-ignite and injects new life into his existence
but also new dilemmas. Harry's devotion nudges Michel
toward unimagined extremes and suggests to him the most
outlandish and frightening solutions to his professional
frustrations. Michel finds himself tottering crazily
between his innate goodness and his desire to achieve
his long suppressed dream under the wing of Harry, a
demonic angel without conscience or good intentions.
Possessing the aura of a Hitchcock comedy,
WITH A FRIEND LIKE HARRY combines agonizing suspense
with brainy humour as it explores the diverting possibilities
of sublimated murderousness.
