untitled at this year's Cannes Film Festival, IN THE
MOOD FOR LOVE marks the return of one of Hong Kong's
hottest young directors, Wong Kar-wai (HAPPY TOGETHER,
CHUNGKING EXPRESS). Set in Hong Kong in 1962, the chief
editor of a local daily newspaper, Chau (Tony Leung)
and his wife move into new accommodations in a building
mainly inhabited by the Shanghai community.
He soon meets Li-chun (Maggie Cheung),
a beautiful young woman who has also just moved into
the building with her husband. She is a secretary in
an export firm, and her husband, often away on business
trips, is a representative for a Japanese company. When
Chau's wife begins to spend considerable time away from
home, Chau finds himself often in Li-chun's company.
They meet for games of mahjong or to discuss the latest
gossip with their landlords. Chau and Li-chun develop
a terrific friendship until, one day, they are forced
to face facts: their respective partners are having
an affair.
Wong Kar-wai brings an exquisite
sophistication and rich imagination to this beautifully
shot and masterful drama.
