Set in the 1950's in a predominantly Italian-American
Staten Island neighborhood, TWO FAMILY HOUSE is the
tale of Buddy Visalo (Michael Rispoli from the hit tv
series THE SOPRANOS), a disgruntled factory worker who
goes after his big dream and gets more than he bargained
for.
Buddy wants to be a singer but he's stuck.
At one time, he believed that he actually had a shot
at the big time, when he was noticed during his military
service singing to the troops and asked to audition
for a well-known entertainer. However, at the time,
his soon-to-be wife Estelle (Katherine Narducci) and
her very traditional family dissuaded him from pursuing
a career in show business.
Since then, Buddy has lived with his in-laws
and concocted numerous money making schemes which never
seem to work out. He comes up with a last make-or-break
plan to put himself on the show business map by investing
in a two family house. He and Estelle will live on the
top floor and the downstairs will be developed into
a restaurant where Buddy can perform nightly. However,
upon closing the deal, hard-luck Buddy discovers that
the upper floor houses two tenants: a pregnant, fresh-off-the-boat
Irish girl Mary (Kelly MacDonald, MY LIFE SO FAR) and
her abusive, alcoholic husband Jim ( Kevin Conway, THE
CONFESSION).
Before Buddy and his Italian friends can
deal with the situation, Mary goes into labour, her
baby is born and her husband Jim deserts her. Buddy
is morally caught between reaching for his dream and
negotiating the ethics of human decency. TWO FAMILY
HOUSE, appearing at Sundance and Toronto film festivals,
is a humorous and gut-wrenching take on the American
Dream in which Buddy follows a bumpy journey from nice
guy to hero with unexpected results.
