An official selection of the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival® and winner of the 2010 Academy Award® for Best Foreign Language film, The Secret in their Eyes (El secreto de sus ojos) is a suspenseful crime drama with a love story at its core. Set in Argentina, the film follows Benjamín Espósito (Ricardo Darín) in the early days of his retirement from his career in Argentina’s criminal court. To occupy himself, he begins writing a novel about a brutal unsolved murder case from his past that has continued to haunt him. Searching for an ending to his book, the would-be writer’s hunt for the truth quickly becomes a personal obsession that draws him into ever-riskier situations and compels him to redeem his past and seize his future.
Director Juan José Campanella’s tightly paced feature pairs smart dialogue with powerful, moving performances from Darín and Soledad Villamil, two of Argentina’s best actors. Beneath all the action is a reflection on justice and the real meaning of a “life sentence”. Pain endures but so, too, does love.
“The wonder is that the film balances its many genres, from the thorns of murder to the bloom of romance to the thickets of politics, with such easy grace.” - Globe and Mail
