"There's much to admire about "The Shipping News," Lasse Hallstrom's adaptation of E. Annie Proulx's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about one man's search for redemption." - Hollywood Reporter

Based on E. Anne Proulx’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same title, THE SHIPPING NEWS is an inspiring portrait of an American family that rediscovers its roots in the Canadian Maritimes. Performed by a critically acclaimed cast – including Kevin Spacey (AMERICAN BEAUTY), Julianne Moore (END OF THE AFFAIR), Cate Blanchett (ELIZABETH) and Dame Judi Dench (CHOCOLAT) – Proulx’s novel finds its way to the screen under the direction of Lasse Hallström (CIDER HOUSE RULES). A struggling American newspaper writer, Quoyle (Kevin Spacey) returns with his two young daughters to a small fishing village in Newfoundland, long part of his family’s past. Though he’s had little success thus far in his life, Quoyle’s "Shipping News" column in the local newspaper finds an appreciative audience, and the family’s slow integration into the community changes their lives forever. THE SHIPPING NEWS is a warm, multi-generational drama that soulfully explores the journey of an emotionally wounded, single-parent family that travels far to find its place and peace in the world.
